A 1930 Ford Model A with a rumble seat, bought by an ecstatic teenager in 1946, was on display at the Pinebrook Retirement Center car show in Milford on June 7.
That teenager is now 95 years old and a resident of Pinebrook. Dan Ledford bought the car from a teacher, thinking only about all the fun and freedom his first car would bring. Little did he know at the time that his purchase would become a beloved family heirloom.
While in Loveland High School he drove his Model A to pick up a girl named Ruth for their first date. This September, that young couple will celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary.
“I always knew I wanted Ruth, and fortunately, I got her. We used to go everywhere in that Ford, and our friends would ride in the rumble seat,” Ledford said.
After they married, Ledford gave the car to his grandfather, who drove it for 25 years. When he stopped driving, the car went to Ledford’s dad who used it to drive to work.
Eventually, the car was returned to Ledford, who restored it and rebuilt the engine. Now his son Jonathan has the car.
Ledford said he has always had a passion for cars and would buy old ones and restore them to new, sometimes taking three to four years to restore one. Often the cars would end up with a family member.
Ruth and Dan Ledford are a delightful couple, with a wonderful family. They have three children, nine grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.
