The 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings take on The Goshen Schoolmasters on Aug. 14 at 1 p.m.
Vintage baseball returns to Goshen when the Goshen Twp. Historical Society hosts the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Come out and support our team The Goshen Schoolmasters, made up of business owners, pastors, Township officials, teachers, and more local talent. Admission is free and there will be plenty of festivities including food and refreshments, split the pot, a special prize raffle from the Cincinnati Red Stockings and the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame, music, and (of course) a seventh inning stretch! The game will be held at the Goshen High School Soccer Practice Field, 6767 Goshen Rd. Goshen OH 45122. Bring your own chairs or a picnic blanket and get ready to root for the home team. There will be fun for the whole family. Food service and other activities begin at 12:30 pm and the game starts at 1pm.
Our opponents are the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings, representing the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame Museum. The Red Stockings play ball by the rules of the 1860’s, specifically 1869. Based on the famed Cincinnati Baseball Club, known for their “Red Stockings”, unabashed professionalism, and undefeated 1869 season when they faced dozens of teams from coast to coast. Our team name honors the great MLB pitcher and Goshen son Sam Leever, 1871-1953. A Goshen High School grad, Sam taught school in Goshen for seven years before signing his first professional contract at the advanced age of 25. His former teaching career, thinning hair, and serious disposition earned him the nickname “The Goshen Schoolmaster.” Sam was a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, played in the very first World Series, and went on to have a stellar career in the major leagues. He retired from baseball in 1913, returned to Goshen where he purchased a 70 acre farm, and indulged in his favorite pastime, trap shooting.
