Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Smith of Owensville, Ohio announce the engagement of their daughter, Rebecca Smith, to Dan Shawhan, son of Tom and Janet Shawhan, of Hillsboro, Ohio. The couple will wed August 21, 2010. Rebecca is a 2006 graduate of Wilmington College and is a legal editor. Dan is a 2004 graduate of the University of Northwestern Ohio. He works with his family on their dairy and grain farm.
As part of an ongoing beautification plan, the Village Association of Batavia recently put new flowers in the planter boxes on the bridge on Main Street. The group used hot pink petunias, blue scaevola and lime green sweet potato vine as the plant material. New this year are four new barrel planters, two on each end of the bridge.
Grant Career Center SkillsUSA members recently returned from Kansas City, Mo. where they competed at the 46th Annual National Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships. The competition was held at H. Roe Bartle Hall and Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, June 21-25.
More than 200 Clermont County residents earned a “second chance” this June. The Clermont County Educational Service Center celebrated its twenty-third annual graduation ceremony for the Adult Basic and Literacy Program (ABLE) on June 10, at Clermont College. During the 2009-10 program year 201 people took the GED test and 146 received their GED Equivalency Diploma.
The Clermont County Commissioners have proclaimed the month of July as Parks and Recreation Month in the county, citing the importance of the park system in establishing and maintaining the quality of life in our community.

The First Baptist of Amelia held its second annual Veterans Memorial Day Sunday, May 30. All veterans present were honored with recognition for their service and a special recognition was given for all veterans past and present.
New Richmond Elementary School lost 66 years of teaching experience when Bonnie Faubion and Jan Gemma hugged their students for the last time May 27 and walked out of their classrooms. Faubion retired after 36 years with New Richmond schools and Gemma after 30 years in the district. Both spent much of their careers teaching kindergarten.
The Pierce Township Police Department has collected 30 used cell phones and has donated 15 to the Clermont YWCA to assist victims of Domestic Violence and/or stalking. The remaining 15 phones will be donated to Cell Phones For Soldiers, a non-profit organization which assists U.S. Armed Forces personnel call home from overseas.
A high school student from Clermont Northeastern High School (CNE) is honored at the first meeting of each month during the school year. These students live their lives in a manner that exemplifies the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”. Jennifer Werring was honored as the club’s “Student of the Month” for May.
