Outgoing, loving, gregarious, jovial, and altruistic; all of these qualities belong to the newly graduated Anderson student, Devin Pieples. All of these amazing qualities are what make her so similar to our beloved Jim Pope who passed away last summer.
Devin Pieples recently won the Jim Pope award that granted her $500 in scholarship money. Pieples won this amazing honor because her actions have spoken so loudly. Her actions have reflected Pope’s exuberant personality. A person that lived life as he did, deserves to be rewarded. Therefore, Anderson is keeping alive Mr. Pope’s love to help others by awarding a scholarship in his name. This scholarship is awarded to a student who loves and cares as strongly as Mr. Pope once did.
Anderson High School has a committee of teachers and various staff whose “job is to try to match these scholarships with the students. Devin, in a lot of ways, exemplifies the same qualities of caring and kindness toward others that Mr. Pope did,” commented Assistant Principal Dave Kammerer. The Scholarship Committee works tirelessly to assign scholarships to the deserving students who match these character descriptions. Devin Pieples is the prime example of the Committee’s labors.
The award was to honor his life. “A group of staff members along with Jim’s family began collecting donations in his name, to honor his life. That way he continued providing for students as he always did,” said Mr. Kammerer as he reminds us why this award came to be. This award is to honor a man who everybody knew and liked. A man who was very outgoing and caring. This award came about to remind a student, who lives their life how Mr. Pope did, that they are loved like Mr. Pope. A student who is inclusive of all people, puts others before himself, makes friends easily, and is good natured are the qualities that will lead to winning the Pope Award. This ongoing award is to award people like Devin who spreads love through Anderson like Mr. Pope did each and every day. Other students like Devin will be able to receive this award in years to come. This was the first of “quite a few years” of Mr. Pope’s legacy through a scholarship.

Mr. Kammerer reminds the community that, “the Jim Pope Scholarship really shows not only the kindness and giving nature of Jim Pope himself, but it also points to the kind of community that we have at Anderson High School. The way people came together here to honor the man is a common occurrence at Anderson.” Devin is a person who reflects the welcoming and loving personality of Jim Pope. Anderson wishes Devin luck and prosperity as she advances her life with the same love that Mr. Pope had for our Anderson community.
