On behalf of the members of Milford Community Fire Department, it is with great sorrow that I announce the sudden death of Retired Fire Chief John E. Cooper, Sr. at his Milford home on Friday evening, April 14, 2017. He was 68 years of age.

Retired Fire Chief Cooper recently celebrated his 50th anniversary as a member of the fire department. Before retiring to the position of volunteer firefighter, Chief Cooper served as Milford’s fire chief for over 37 years. He retired from that role in January 2016.

In addition to his long-time vocation, Chief Cooper was also a member of numerous professional, veteran and fraternal organizations and facilitator of numerous charitable causes during his life. His efforts exemplified the strong affection he held for his country, community and vocation. He was a true patriot, respected leader in the community, and outstanding fire chief.

We suffered a tremendous loss with his sudden death. In the days following, there were tears and laughter as everyone touched by his death came to grips with reality, reflected on a life well-lived, and began planning a tribute befitting of Chief’s life and accomplishments.

My co-workers and I want to thank the greater Cincinnati community for all it has done for the Cooper family and MCFD throughout this difficult past week. It is virtually impossible to acknowledge every individual, group, agency, and community that came to our aid. Suffice it to say, we are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of concern and support shown us all.

If this were another family or fire department you could bet Chief Cooper would have been there, ready to lend a hand. It’s what good servants do…Chief was simply one of the best.

Please join his Milford Community Fire Department co-workers in expressing our deepest sympathies to Chief Cooper’s family and friends at this time of great loss and sorrow. He will be missed.
