The Williamsburg Lady Wildcats girls’ basketball team has played two games so far this season and in both contests the team has emerged victorious.
On Saturday, Nov. 26, the Lady Wildcats traveled to Ripley to take on the Lady Jays. The first quarter was competitive, with Kasey Connor scoring five points to help the Lady Wildcats take an 11-8 lead. Hope Schaljo, Jessica Chase and Libby Connor each added two points for Williamsburg.
In the second quarter, Leslie Engel led the Lady Wildcats with seven points. Engel shot eight free-throws in the quarter, connecting on three of them. Peyton Fisher added five points, while Chase and Kasey Connor contributed three points and two points, respectively.
The Lady Wildcats held a 29-19 lead at the break. Ripley answered in the third quarter, erupting for 19 points thanks to six points from Kursten Prater and four from Jennifer Eichner. Carlee Daulton added three while Cailey Kirk, Kacy Gilkerson and Kassey Arnett each chipped in two.
Kasey Connor led the Lady Wildcats with four points in the third quarter. She and Emily Brown were the only two Lady Wildcats to make multiple baskets in the period. Brown hit a free-throw and a two-point shot to tally three points.
Williamsburg’s defense in the fourth quarter led them to the win. The Lady Wildcats held Ripley to just six points en route to a 55-44 win.
Chase totaled 14 points and four rebounds for Williamsburg. Engel tallied nine points and three boards, while Kasey Connor snagged seven rebounds and nine points for the Lady Wildcats, who shot 48.8 percent from the field as a team but just one of nine from behind the arc.
The Lady Wildcats carried that momentum into their second game, a road contest against Goshen on Monday, Nov. 28. Williamsburg’s 22-point second quarter seemingly put the game away, as the Lady Wildcats held a 36-21 lead at the break. Goshen answered with a 19-8 run in the third quarter, but the Lady Warriors came up just short in a 61-58 loss to Williamsburg.
The Lady Wildcats host Western Brown at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1. Goshen visits Bethel-Tate that same night, with the game also scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
