Defense hadn’t exactly been the strong suit of the Glen Este Trojans football team so far this season.
Entering the team’s week six tilt against Withrow, the 0-5 Trojans had allowed at least 35 points in every single game of the season, with opponents scoring at least 42 points three times.
That didn’t happen on Sept. 30. Glen Este’s defense limited the Tigers to just 187 total yards of offense while the Trojans racked up 436 yards in Glen Este’s 12-6 road win.
Neither team scored in the first quarter. Glen Este struck first with 6:01 on the clock in the second period, with Jacob French hitting a 30-yard field goal to put the Trojans ahead 3-0.
Withrow answered, as Amir Willis scored on a nine-yard run less than 40 seconds later. The extra point was missed, putting Withrow ahead 6-3.
The score stayed that way until just before the halftime break when French connected on a 26-yard field goal to tie the game at six.
No team cracked the scoring column in the third period. Glen Este got a six-yard run from Elijah Johnson to go back on top 12-6. The Trojans won by that score.
Glen Este quarterback Evan Shirley finished the game nine of 25 passing for 171 yards and a pair of interceptions.
Aaron Johnston carried the ball 35 yards for 138 yards. Johnson carried the ball 11 times for 40 yards and a touchdown. Shirley earned 10 carries for 56 yards.
Joe Wahl and Johnston each recorded three receptions, with Wahl tallying 61 yards to Johnston’s 32. Tyler Steinker had two receptions for a team-high 66 yards.
Logan Moore tallied a sack for Glen Este. Johnson had the Trojans’ lone interception.
Glen Este returns home this week for a Homecoming Week matchup against a 4-2 Anderson squad. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7.
