UC Clermont’s American Bar Association approved Paralegal Studies Program is one of Ohio’s premier paralegal education programs and a leader in integrating technology throughout its program.

The program’s classes are taught by experienced attorneys and offer practical, hands-on legal training.

What is a paralegal and why are they so sought after?

Paralegals assist attorneys in work that the attorney would otherwise be doing, with two exceptions: they cannot give legal advice and they cannot stand up in court. That leaves a massive amount of work that a paralegal can do, and in busy law firms they are doing a massive amount of work.

Paralegals draft legal documents, meet with clients, research case law and social media to find relevant information. They work as the “right hand” of the attorney in all aspects of legal work.

The paralegal profession has been booming over the last ten years and is projected to grow 28 percent between 2008 and 2018. According to the Program Director, Associate Professor Page Beetem, paralegals are critical in delivering quality legal services at affordable prices.

Since 2008, more and more clients are demanding that law firms produce both quality and competitive pricing.

Paralegals are becoming a key part of the quality and competitive pricing formula. Paralegal work with attorneys, performing substantive legal work, while communicating with clients and assuring that they are part of the legal team working the case.

Employers are hiring paralegals to perform tasks once done by attorneys in order to reduce costs and increase the availability and efficiency of legal services.

“I receive so many calls from employers looking for good candidates that is it sometimes difficult to fill the need. It is a good position to be in, but we are looking to train more qualified students,” said Beetem.

One of the most unique features of the program is its post-degree certificate. If a person has a bachelors or associate degree, they can focus solely on the legal courses and complete the certificate in just one year.

If you are a recent high school or college graduate seeking a marketable skill, looking to change careers, return to the workforce, or considering law school, the Paralegal Studies Program at UC Clermont may be a great fit.

If you are interested in learning more, UC Clermont College is hosting an Open House and free information session for those interested in the paralegal field on Saturday, June 25 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. in the Snyder Building, Room 154 at 4200 Clermont College Dr. in Batavia.
