Volunteer cooking instructor Laurie Schrand, RD (left) and La Soupe chef Suzy DeYoung put donated, unsold peppers to use with families in a cooking lesson.
La Soupe, a business based in Newtown, taught a cooking class to families of West Clermont preschoolers at the United Way Born Learning Academy April 22 at Withamsville-Tobasco Elementary. Following the lesson and food preparation, each family took home the result of their learning: a ready-to-cook meal the following day — slow-cooker stuffed peppers — and a new crockpot.

United Way Born Learning Academies strives to help parents learn to use everyday moments as learning moments. Born Learning materials help parents, families and caregivers promote school readiness and literacy and enlist business leaders and decision makers in the cause.

La Soupe rescues otherwise wasted produce to create nutritious meals for customers, non-profits and food-insecure families. It is a non-profit organization with partnerships with Kroger, Jungle Jim’s and various local organic farms.
