The Amelia Lady Barons won the Mariemont Invitational last week.

The Amelia Lady Barons track and field team had a victorious week last week.

Joined by fellow Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference members Batavia and New Richmond, the team competed in the Mariemont Invitational, hosted by Mariemont High School.

Ally Brown got the Lady Barons off to the right start by winning the 100-meter dash. Brown posted a time of 13.16 seconds in the event. Abby Brown also faired well in the race, placing fifth.

Freshman Maddie Walker won the girls’ 1600-meter run, finishing less than two seconds ahead of Wyoming’s Whitley Elsass. New Richmond junior Shelbi Simpson placed fifth.

Batavia senior Leona Burton Rojas placed second in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 26.52 seconds. Ally Brown was right behind her, clocking in third place with a mark of 27.22 seconds.

Abby Brown placed second in the 300-meter hurdles, posting a time of 39.74 seconds that was .9 seconds behind winner Carson Fields from Mariemont. New Richmond’s Jocelyn Nehls and Christina Laroy placed seventh and eighth, respectively.

In the 3200-meter run, New Richmond freshman Caitlin Biehle set the mark to beat, finishing in just over 12 minutes to win the event. Amelia’s Morgan Walsh was third while Biehle’s teammate Claire Burns placed fifth.

A pair of Lady Barons placed in the top five of the 400-meter dash. Maddie Walker and Maria Cardarelli placed second and third, respectively. Walker’s time of 1:01.14 was 4.62 seconds slower than Hughes’ Tiona Lattimore, who won the event.

Walsh and Cardarelli teamed up to place first and second in the girls’ 800-meter run. Simpson placed fifth for New Richmond, two spots ahead of teammate Emily Belmont.

Jody Lytle placed fourth in the discus for New Richmond with an 80-foot toss. Sophia Hawkins finished seventh with a 75-foot, six-inch heave.

Aubree Story won the high jump for the Lady Lions as well, clearing the five-foot mark. Cardarelli placed fourth.Burton Rojas won the long jump, leaping 16 feet, 7.5 inches, nearly 2.5 feet further than any other competitor. Abby Brown placed third for Amelia with a mark of 13 feet, nine inches.

All told, the Lady Barons tallied 98 points and won the event. Host Mariemont was second with 78 points while New Richmond placed fifth with 47. Batavia finished ninth, two points ahead of Gamble Montessori.

The boys’ results were not as kind to the locals. New Richmond led the trio of schools with a seventh-place finish. Amelia tallied 13 points and placed 12th, with Batavia one point behind in 13th.

Individually, Batavia’s Nathan DeRose placed third in the 3200-meter run, less than four seconds out of first place. Amelia’s Blake Boykin finished third in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 50.93 seconds.

New Richmond’s Nick Sanchez won the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, seven inches.
