The village of Moscow council accepted the resignation of councilwoman Beth Nevel during its meeting on Feb. 4.

Nevel did not meet the residency requirements necessary to fill the council position.

On Jan. 7, Nevel was appointed by the council to fill the seat left vacant by Brenda Jones, whose resignation took effect at the end of December.

“Basically, we made a mistake last month in appointing Beth,” said Mayor Tim Suter.

He added, “Based on a residency requirement, our legal counsel said that Beth would need to be a resident for one year; she didn’t meet those requirements.”

Nevel moved to Moscow in 1994. She moved just outside of Moscow in late 2012 and returned in late 2015.

Since the council appointed Nevel, the responsibility of appointing a new councilmember goes to the mayor, according to Suter.

“I will interview the candidates, give a couple of weeks for folks to get their input in, and next month, I will appoint someone,” Suter said.
