David Sheldon, a recent graduate of Milford High School, has been chosen as an Ashbrook Scholar, the Ashbrook Center at Ashland University announced today. The program, which focuses on U.S. government and history, includes a minimum $2,000 annual scholarship.

The Ashbrook Scholar program is a top-rated academic program for undergraduates studying political science or history at Ashland University. The program is administered by the Ashbrook Center, a university-affiliated nonprofit organization that provides educational programs for both college students and high school civics, government and U.S. history teachers.

“The Ashbrook Scholar program is a highly competitive program for serious students with a passion for civic leadership,” said Roger Beckett, Executive Director for the Ashbrook Center. “Only the most qualified and dedicated students are selected.”

Ashbrook Scholars experience a learning environment far removed from a standard college education. While obtaining a traditional liberal arts education from the university, Ashbrook Scholars also engage in private conversations with distinguished visiting scholars and public figures, take part in seminars taught using the Socratic method, participate in internships tailored to their interests, and write, present, and defend a “Statesmanship Thesis.”

All Ashbrook Scholars are awarded a minimum $2,000 annual scholarship, renewable each year based on merit. Several other named scholarships also have been established specifically for Ashbrook Scholars. On average, Ashbrook Scholars receive nearly $13,000 per year in scholarships.
