The Clermont County Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America presented County Historian Richard Crawford with a dedication plaque on a park bench at the Veterans Memorial Park in Union Township on June 27.

“This is kind of like a lifetime achievement award,” said VVA Chapter President Mark Brandon. “Richard has helped us with a lot of things through the years, so we wanted to recognize him.”

Crawford worked with the chapter to research the names of local veterans who appear on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and he has been a guest speaker at chapter meetings.

“He is an interesting speaker and a great resource” said Brandon. “He’s shared tidbits about things that have happened here and made me aware of the important history in Clermont County.”

The plaque reads: “Dedicated to Richard Crawford for his loyal support and commitment to the Vietnam Veterans of America.”

“I am absolutely thrilled to be honored in this way,” said Crawford. “My work with the Vietnam veterans represents the first time I researched and wrote about people my own age, whereas I usually research and write about people from the Civil War and Revolutionary War.”

Crawford grew up in Amelia and credits his passion for history to his parents and fourth grade teacher.

“When I noticed there was only one paragraph in our Ohio history book covering Clermont County, I took it upon myself to research the history of this area,” Crawford said.

He’s been studying the history of Clermont County ever since.

“I’m always promoting Clermont County, and I want people to realize the important role this area has played throughout history,” he said.

Crawford added that he most enjoys talking to kids about history.

“I like to see their eyes light up. When the kids realize our significance in history, it’s just incredible,” Crawford said.

“I think learning about history helps deter problems like crime, theft and arson because people tend to respect things more when they realize the importance of it.”

Crawford said he plans to use the park bench that has been dedicated to him.

“I like to sit on that bench and watch people play basketball anyway,” said Crawford.
