Ohio State University Extension Clermont County will be hosting Dining with Diabetes (DWD), a three-class health workshop, May 20, 27, and June 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Clermont County Fairgrounds 4-H Hall, 1000 Locust Street, Owensville.

DWD is a program conducted by Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) staff and community health partners. The program helps individuals learn strategies to manage their diabetes through menu planning, carbohydrate counting, portion control, label reading and recipe modification.

Clermont Extension has hosted DWD since 2013, led by FCS staff members Margaret Jenkins and Mona Glover. Community health partner Robert Westbrook, pharmacist and owner of The Pill Box Pharmacy in Amelia, is a series presenter. Westbrook is a certified diabetes educator.

“This workshop teaches a new way for individuals to approach eating and lifestyle changes to support their health,” Glover said.

Diabetes is a health problem for many Ohioans. More than 830,000 adult Ohioans have been diagnosed with diabetes, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and a study done by the Ohio Department of Health. An additional 200,000 are estimated to have diabetes and don’t know it.

The cost for the three-class DWD workshop is $35 per participant, which includes a follow-up reunion in November. To download a registration form, visit clermont.osu.edu. Workshop dates for summer and fall are also listed on the website. If questions, please contact Clermont Extension at 513-732-7070.

Clermont Extension is a non-formal education branch of OSU. The office merges needs of local citizens with OSU’s research through four focus areas: Family & Consumer Sciences, 4-H Youth Development, Agriculture & Natural Resources and Community Development.
