Dr. Joseph Sheppard took a leap of faith when he moved his business from a location in a strip mall in Amelia to a spot in Union Township to create a living well center.

After being in his new location for about two years, a house his wife designed and his brother-in-law built, Sheppard began offering yoga classes upstairs, called Second Floor Yoga, about two and a half months ago.

The core beliefs of Sheppard Chiropractic are in chiropractic alignments, massage, nutrition, exercise and acupuncture, Sheppard said.

“The yoga was just an excellent idea for people for, number one, exercise, stress reduction and flexibility,” Sheppard said.

Sheppard is not aware of anything else like this on the east side. He built his new location to be quaint, warm and welcoming, something that would induce a healing atmosphere, Sheppard said.

“In a highly stressed world people need things that will help them deal with situations in everyday life,” Sheppard said.

Second Floor Yoga has three instructors that teach five classes a week. Sheppard plans to keep the classes at eight students or less and will add more classes based on demand.

All of the teachers have different teaching styles, instructor Megan Beamer said. She has more flow between poses for strength and ability and the other instructors have a more meditative style of teaching.

It is valuable to keep classes small so that the room isn’t crowded, and there’s more interaction and connection between the instructor and the student, Beamer said.

The floor in Second Floor Yoga is cork, which has better buoyancy. The space is open, serene and quiet with lots of natural light, Beamer said.

Yoga is beneficial because it increases body strength and mobility, it helps create peace of mind, it is relaxing and helps increase focus, Beamer said. For Beamer personally, it has helped her deal with anxiety.

“What yoga means is a union. So it’s a union of the mind, body and spirit,” Beamer said. When the mind, body and spirit become one, a person finds balance in their life, she said.

A new student with a reservation costs $10 and a single class with a reservation costs $15. For more information, go to sheppardchiropractic.com/yoga or call 513-753-7246.

Second Floor Yoga is having two open houses, one on May 22 from 6-7 p.m. and one on June 4 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Also, during the summer, high school and college students can attend classes for $13.

Sheppard Chiropractic and Second Floor Yoga are located at 3878 McMann Rd.
