Grant Career Center FEA members Keely Ackerman and Amberlin Mote proudly hold the award they received at the State FEA Leadership Conference.
Members of Grant Career Center’s Teacher Academy had the privilege to attend the Ohio Future Educators Association State Conference held at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, March 13, 2015. The students joined nearly 800 high school and middle school students from over 50 statewide chapters at the annual conference featuring leadership sessions, competitions, and personal development activities. Accompanying the students on their trip to the leadership conference were instructor Julie Crozier, Superintendent Lisa Tuttle-Huff, and staff member, Ron Dunn.

Students entered several competitions and were rewarded with state honors in the Inside our Schools Video Competition. The purpose of the Inside Our Schools Competition is to allow FEA chapter members to showcase one innovative strategy that their school or school district employs to enhance teaching and learning. The students showcased the robotic arm and rapid prototyper used in the engineering lab. Team member Keely Ackerman said, “ We focused on how technology the engineering students utilize in their classroom helps to prepare them for college and for a future career.”

The video itself was recognized as a Top Five Award winner and was created by Keely Ackerman, Elizabeth Burton, Devon Denune and Amberlin Mote. Presenting the video at the conference were Keely Ackerman and Amberlin Mote who were awarded first place honors in the state for their presentation. Keely and Amberlin will have the opportunity to present their video at the National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. in late April.

Halee Curtis and Hannah Lewis participated in the Children’s Literature competition. The purpose of the children’s literature competition is to provide students with an opportunity to creatively express themselves by writing and producing a children’s book. Halee and Hannah designed and illustrated a book titled Sara’s New Friend that shared a story about a young girl who learned sign language to communicate with her new friend.

Halee Curtis, Maren Hance, Lexi Jump, Hannah Lewis, Zac Walton and Shyann Webb all participated in the Ethical Dilemma Competition. The chapter must debate an ethical education-related dilemma and requires members to think deeply about an ethical issue, employ critical-thinking skills, and use persuasive communication techniques to collaboratively debate an ethical dilemma. This year’s topic challenged the students to handle issues with school grading policies and how to be fair to all students.
