The Grant Career Center Culinary Arts students have been busy in between snow days preparing for their FCCLA Regional Competition.

The competition was rescheduled twice due to weather, and the students have used the extra time to perfect their techniques!

The FCCLA Regional Competition was held at Pike County Career Center in March and showcased the culinary skills of six students. Seniors Tammy Lockaby and Courtney Jervis concentrated on their baking skills and competed in the Pastry Arts category. Tammy created a rainbow swirl cake that was as tasty as it was colorful and earned a silver medal while Courtney prepared a tray of tea-inspired treats that won a bronze medal. The girls showcased their skills in a demonstration format during the competition which featured at least one skill and showcased their finished product.

In the Garde Manager Competition, senior Tonya Snodgrass and junior Kirsten Savage sliced and diced fruit and vegetables to perfection and showcased their plating and presentation skills. Both students created amazing platters of delightful appetizers that were eye-appealing and delicious. For her efforts, Kirsten earned a gold medal, while Tonya proudly displayed her silver medal.

Not to be outdone by the girls, senior Theo Kidwell and junior Gregory Beasley entered the Dining Room Attendant competition. They were faced with clearing a table, politely excusing the guests, and then resetting the table. This all happened quickly as they were completing their assignment in a timed competition. Both young men were awarded bronze medals for their efforts. The students were very proud of their first competition results and look forward to more opportunities to share their new skills. The FCCLA chapter is led by Culinary Arts instructor, Chef Nicolette Cash.
