Hamer
Staff report

Hamer comes to UC Clermont with more than 15 years of coaching experience.

Before coming to UC Clermont, Hamer helped start the volleyball program at Cincinnati State in 2013 and was the assistant coach for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Hamer was also the head coach for Xavier University’s men’s club volleyball team for the 2013-14 season.

Prior to his two years with Cincinnati State, Hamer was the head freshman volleyball coach at Boone County High School in Kentucky.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to the UC Clermont Volleyball Program and to help continue the tradition of excellence that has been established here,” Hamer said.

Hamer’s career also includes coaching Junior Olympic Club Volleyball for the past six years and has taken several teams to compete in national tournaments.

He is currently the 16-1 head coach at Midwest Xtreme Volleyball Club. He also serves as a lead coach at the club where he oversees all teams ages 15 and is also the clubs college recruitment coordinator helping players at the club get recruited to play college volleyball.

Hamer replaces Joe Harpring who retired after 14 years and as the Clermont College head volleyball coach where he compiled a 203-85 record during his tenure.

“A number of things (went into the decision to step down),” Harpring said in December, shortly after making the decision to step away from the program. “I’ve been doing this for 14 years and even though it’s (considered) a part-time job by UC’s definition, it really has evolved into a full-time activity just to keep up with the other schools, recruiting and all the administrative duties that coaches have to do.

“Putting that along with my day job (as an Employee Plans Ruling and Agreements Analyst) where my time commitment is growing, it got to the point where it was getting to be too much.”

Harpring said that the growing commitment to both jobs virtually eliminated any free time he would otherwise enjoy with family and friends.

“I have been the athletic director for eight years and Joe has been the only volleyball coach that I have worked during my tenure,” UC Clermont Athletic Director Brian Sullivan said. “He has always had very professional, competitive and well respected teams. In the classroom, his teams would consistently achieve 3.0 (grade point averages) or better. Joe has provided a foundation of greatness that we can build on here at Clermont.”

“It will be incredibly difficult (to leave the program behind),” Harpring said. “It’s kind of been my baby that I’ve watched grow for the past several years.

“The athletic program, in general, at Clermont has grown in the past several years getting a national affiliation and things like that. The volleyball program has grown as well.”
