Stepping Stones is looking for nurses for its day and overnight camps for children and adults with disabilities.
Sites are Stepping Stones Given, on Given Road in Indian Hill and Stepping Stones Allyn at Camp Allyn in Batavia.
“We’re looking for up to 12 nurses who can work full time or part-time schedules in the summer,” said Stepping Stones Nursing Supervisor Linda Apel of Milford.
Nurses’ duties range from administering medications and Band Aids to assisting with tube feedings, said Apel. “We take care of all medical needs while at camp.”
Stepping Stones serves more than 450 children in day camps at the Given and Allyn campuses and close to 300 teens and adults in overnight camps and staycations at the Allyn campus. Disabilities include autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, seizure disorders and multiple disabilities.
Apel has been a Stepping Stones nurse for 15 years.
“It’s a great way to use our nursing skills in the field of disabilities,” she said.
“When you collect meds in the morning, the smiles are worth 1,000 words. They are so thrilled to be here,” she said of the young campers.
Mary Alice Franz of Anderson Township will be coming back as a camp nurse at the Allyn Campus in Batavia.
“I love to see the participants,” she said. “You need to be methodical and organized, have a lot of understanding, and provide a friendly face and a friendly touch,” she said. “You have to figure out the best way to give medications or treatments for each person. By the end of camp, you really know that person.”
