The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors held its January meeting on Thursday morning, Jan. 22 at the OHSAA office. The following are highlights from the meeting. Complete meeting minutes will be posted at OHSAA.org.

The board approved a contract extension with the Jerome Schottenstein Center at The Ohio State University to host the OHSAA’s individual wrestling and girls and boys basketball state tournaments through 2021. Those three state tournaments have been held at the Schottenstein Center since the facility opened in 1999.

The board approved several items to be placed on the annual referendum ballot that schools will vote on in May. The OHSAA will issue a separate press release next week with the items that have been approved to go on the ballot.

The board approved an OHSAA staff proposal to change the start date for girls and boys soccer regular-season games in 2015 to be Friday, Aug. 21. Additional information will be posted on the OHSAA soccer webpages.

Since the board’s October meeting, 26 member schools were penalized for committing infractions of OHSAA bylaws or sports regulations. The list of infractions and penalties is always included in the complete meeting minutes, but media members may request the list in advance from Tim Stried, OHSAA Director of Information Services, at tstried@ohsaa.org.

The board approved the tournament regulations for the individual wrestling tournament. The regulations will be posted on the wrestling page at OHSAA.org.

The attendance and financial report from the 2014 track and field regional and state tournaments were presented to the board. The two-day total attendance at the state tournament was 27,060, which marked the fourth-highest attendance figure at the OHSAA state track tournament since it began in 1908.

The board approved the 2015 track and field regional dates and sites. The information will be posted on the track and field webpage at OHSAA.org. In addition, the board approved the spring sports manuals in baseball, softball, boys tennis and track and field, which are posted on their respective webpages at OHSAA.org.

The board was informed that Brecksville-Broadview Heights’ Joan Ganim has been named 2014 national coach of the year in the ‘other sports’ category for girls gymnastics by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Ganim will be honored at the 2015 state tournament. The NFHS release is posted at: http://www.ohsaa.org/news/2014NationalCoachesoftheYearPressRelease.pdf. Section and state coaches of the year will be announced by the NFHS soon.

The board was informed that former Roger Bacon High School and Cincinnati Princeton High School basketball coach the late Bill Brewer and former Leesburg Fairfield High School coach and athletic director Jim Cook have been selected to receive OHSAA Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Meritorious Service Awards. Brewer’s family and Cook will be honored during the 2015 boys basketball state tournament.
