Union Township Police Department Operations Commander Lieutenant Scott Gaviglia is the township’s next police chief.

In a room packed with law enforcement officials and leaders from around Clermont County, Union Township Trustees appointed Gaviglia to chief Jan. 8. He was sworn in and received his badge.

Trustee John McGraw said township officials are very excited to have Gaviglia serve as the next chief.

“I am very happy he accepted,” Trustee Lloyd Acres said.

Gaviglia began his work with Union Township in 1997 as a patrol officer, Beamer said. Gaviglia was promoted to sergeant and then lieutenant.

Gaviglia had been serving as interim chief since Zinser retired late last year.

“He has the necessary skills and training to be chief,” Beamer said about Gaviglia. “He’s done a great job as lieutenant.”

Gaviglia thanked trustees, the many people he has worked with, and his family and friends during the meeting.

“I’d like to thank trustees for this opportunity to lead one of the best police departments in the nation,” Gaviglia said.

Seventeen years ago Gaviglia started as a rookie patrol officer, he said.

“I got to know how special Union Township is,” he said. “I am proud to serve such a fine community and then men and women of the police department. They not only make me look good, but the whole community.”

Former Union Township police chiefs Terry Zinser and Tom Knox were at the ceremony to assist with the presentation of the badge and presentation of Eagles.

After a 37-year career, Zinser said it was time for him to retire. He said he is glad that township officials decided on Gaviglia to become the next chief.

“I fully support this,” Zinser said about Gaviglia filling his shoes. “There comes a time when you have to pass the reins, I can’t think of anyone better to pass them to than Gaviglia.”

Gaviglia said he truly believes there is no obstacle too big to overcome, and is excited to begin his duties.

“I am excited about the task at hand and the challenges that lie ahead,” Gaviglia said. “I can’t wait to get started.
