“There is a real need for additional structured activities for youth in our community, and the United Way funding will help expand the after-school program for middle schoolers here in Felicity,” says Sue McKinley, project manager, Felicity Initiative for Neighborhood Excellence (FINE), a United Way place matters initiative.

United Way of Greater Cincinnati – Eastern Area approved $5,000 to support the project, which will provide a safe environment, structured activities and supervision through the sponsorship of Felicity Middle School’s Caring Parent Council.

Three volunteer teachers are staffing the program, which will continue to meet through the end of the school year. It will offer clubs for students in science, art & crafts, reading, drama, walking, and glee. Each club will present a performance or other project at the end of the school year.

“This project will also empower parents to offer a positive influence on student achievement,” says McKinley.

Over the past three years, the place matters program in Felicity/Franklin Township has been leading citizens in organizing programs to improve their quality of life. Activities benefiting youth have included Cool Tools for School backpack and school supply events, and a summer program focusing on respect, nutrition and wise use of time.
