LOOK to Clermont participants learned about civic engagement and county infrastructure Nov. 18 at the Clermont County Commissioner’s Office.
LOOK to Clermont is a youth development course, operated by Ohio State University Extension Clermont County and University of Cincinnati Clermont College, for Clermont high school juniors and seniors. Participants develop leadership skills, while earning post-secondary enrollment option (PSEO) credit, by meeting each month for a theme day and completing a group project.
Students met with Commissioner David Uible to learn about county government and commissioners’ role in local government.
Next they met with county engineer Pat Manger to discuss the Route 32 corridor project and how offices throughout the county interface on large tasks.
The Clermont County League of Women Voters taught the final lesson of the class, “Now You’re 18,” a program explaining legal rights.
“The goal of this class is to teach civic engagement,” said Margaret Jenkins, LOOK to Clermont advisor and director of Clermont Extension. “We want the students to see the concepts firsthand.”
Clermont Extension is a non-formal education branch of The Ohio State University. The office merges needs of local citizens with OSU’s research through four focus areas: Family & Consumer Sciences, 4-H Youth Development, Agriculture & Natural Resources and Community Development.
