A student has been charged after falsely reporting a shooting at Batavia Middle School Nov. 12.

Batavia Local School District Interim Superintendent Barbara Bradley said the student used a phone that was out of service but could still call 911 to call in the false shooting.

“A student had a phone that only had 911 on it,” Bradley said. “And called it in as a prank after school.”

Bradley said the student told police that there was a shooting at the middle school.

“The chief responded immediately,” Bradley said. “Within minutes.”

She said police handled the incident when they arrived.

“The student was taken into custody and charged,” Bradley said.

Bradley thanked Batavia Police Chief Michael Gardner and Middle School Principal Susan Hakel for handling the situation.

“She and Chief Gardner handled most of that,” Bradley said.

Bradley said because of the incident the district will be working on their after school safety plan.

“We’re working on guidelines for an after school safety plan,” Bradley said. “Procedures for coaches and other people to train them like we do everyone else.”

She said Chief Gardner is also putting together a plan for police officers.
