Space is available for potential hunters who want to take Ohio’s hunter education course before many of the state’s popular seasons begin, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

Ohio’s hunter education courses are taught by certified instructors and are designed for every age and ability.

Courses are taught by some of Ohio’s best and most knowledgeable hunters.

Many people who take a hunter education course have never hunted, but want to try it. Find an available class at wildohio.gov or call 1-800-WILDLIFE (1-800-945-3543).

Hunter education is a requirement for all first-time license buyers in Ohio, except those who hunt with an apprentice license.

The ODNR Division of Wildlife offers three types of certification courses: instructor-led training, home-study courses, and proficiency testing.

A home-study course is available for Ohio residents, and students complete a test led by certified instructors.

A proficiency test is available for Ohio residents 18 and older and experienced in hunting and safe firearms handling.

New hunters can also gain experience in the field with an Ohio apprentice hunting license. An apprentice license holder must be accompanied by an experienced, licensed hunter 21 years old or older.

Courses are still available in Adams, Brown, Clermont, Darke, Highland and Warren Counties. Space is limited and you must pre-register.
