Republican Congressman Brad Wenstrup held on to his seat in the United States House of Representatives in the November general election.

Wenstrup defeated his second congressional district opponent Democrat Marek Tyszkiewicz by 63,546 votes. Wenstrup received 63.86 percent of the votes and Tyszkiewicz received 36.14 percent of votes in across the district.

“I am honored that the people of the second district were on the same page and wanted me to go back,” Wenstrup said about being re-elected.

Wenstrup said he is eager to get back to work representing the district.

“I think that by and large it’s not a time for anyone to gloat, but to roll up our sleeves and get back to work,” Wenstrup said.

He said he is looking forward to continuing working on issues that include healthcare, boarder security, and his work with veterans affairs.

“We need to continue to work on crafting a successful healthcare system,” Wenstrup said. “I think we need to manage our border. That affects national security. We can manage the drug problem such as heroin and epidemics such as Ebola. Everything can flow from there.”

Wenstrup is a podiatrist and served in the United States Army Reserves in Iraq. He was elected to congress in 2012.

Tyszkiewicz said he wants to congratulate Wenstrup on winning the election.

“He ran a great race,” Tyszkiewicz said. “He gave me every opportunity to make my case. I just want to congratulate him.”

Tyszkiewicz said looking at the election Democrats lost across the board. He said he is not sure what else they could have done to change the results.

He said he is not sure yet if he will run again.

“I want to let everything settle in and then think about the future,” he said.
