Dear Editor:

I am in the running for Clermont County Commissioner.

I understand that an article was written recently about my opponent in the race, David Uible, wanting to become a pilot. The irony that I find here is that I am a pilot; I worked for Comair Airlines for 18 years before having to retire at the ripe young age of 60. A Federal Air Regulation that now allows you to stay until you are 65.

So here we are, a pilot “wannabe” going against a politician “wannabe.” What to do? We must have conflict, right? After all, why would a citizen vote for one candidate over the other unless there were a controversy. So, I suggest aerial combat! We could fly high in the skies over Clermont County and have a dogfight just like those intrepid pilots of previous wars.

I’m sure Mr. Uible would have a newer, faster, well-armed aircraft while I would have an older, slower, less-armed airplane. I would have to figure-out tactics to out maneuver him so that I could move in for the “kill”! An awesome task. In the end, one of us will go down in flames as the other does his victory roll and heads home to the applause of the voters.

But, like in the movies, no one really dies. The loser, like the “Phoenix,” will raise out of the ashes, put the pieces back together and live to fly, and fight, another day. I, for one, will keep the fighting clean. Legend has it that back in World War I, the opposing pilots would salute each other before going into battle. They were the gentlemen of the air. I would like to be the gentleman of politics. With that being said, let’s fly!
