Clermont County Commissioners declared October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the county during their Sept. 24 meeting.

Commissioner David Uible read a proclamation from commissioners and said the timing could not be more appropriate with several domestic violence incidents in the spotlight recently.

“We really appreciate commissioners taking time to issue this proclamation,” Theresa Singleton, director of Protection From Abuse at the YWCA of Greater Cincinnati, said.

Singleton said domestic violence negatively affects many people in a community.

“Domestic Violence diminishes the quality of life for everyone,” Singleton said.

Singleton said the domestic violence incidents in the news have been raising awareness.

“It’s a horrible thing, but on the positive side it did spark conversation,” Singleton said.

According to the YWCA, Domestic Violence Awareness Month was created by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence in October of 1981 with a goal of connecting advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.

There are several events and activities to go along with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the Greater Cincinnati area.

In Clermont County, there will be a Clermont County Domestic Violence Awareness Luncheon Oct. 14 at the Union Township Civic Center.
