Batavia Township trustees recognized Mark and Donna Cann for their service as volunteers during their Aug. 4 meeting.

Administrator Rex Parsons said Mark and Donna Cann volunteered to help build the playground at the community center and also volunteered during Reds Rookie Success League.

“They clearly have a strong sense of community,” Parsons said.

Parsons said the Canns went above and beyond during Reds Rookie Success League this year by donating food gift cards for all of the children at the camp.

Parsons said the target audience for the camp is children who are on the free and reduced lunch list at their schools, so for some of the children the camp is also an opportunity to eat a meal.

“On the last day Mark and Donna purchased gift cards for McDonald’s for each of the kids,” Parsons said. “This is above what is expected from a volunteer.”

Donna Cann said they were trying to keep the donation a secret because they didn’t want to be recognized for what they had done.

“Nobody was supposed to know,” Donna Cann said.

She said her and Mark had a great time volunteering at the camp and working with the children, but she said she did see the opportunity to provide additional help.

“It’s sad when they come through the food line and want to go back through for more, or take food home to their brothers and sisters,” Cann said.

Mark Cann said he is glad that the township hosts the camp and that trustees and township officials participate in the camp.

Trustees recognized Mark and Donna Cann for their volunteer efforts and presented them with a plaque during the meeting.
