West Clermont Local School District Board of Education member Mark Merchant passed away May 14.

Merchant was a Union Township resident for the past 20 years, according to the school district.

Merchant was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and gradated from Indiana University School of Business and Administration. He served in the United States Army and was honored with the Soldier’s Medal for Heroism.

Merchant was a business owner and professional painter and general contractor in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Merchant also spent time helping children.

According to the district, he was involved with scout troops for many years and enjoyed working with committee members as well as working with the scouts where his favorite activities included camping, cooking, orienteering and working with Eagle Scout candidates.

He helped raise funds for the Amelia football team, was a founding member with the West Clermont Education Foundation, and a substitute teacher at the district.

“Mark was dedicated to the development of youth throughout Clermont County,” officials with West Clermont School District said in a statement.

Merchant is survived by his wife Grace and son Jordan.

Services for Merchant will be held at 2 p.m. May 31 at All Saints Lutheran Church in Cincinnati. He will be buried at Hoverstock Cemetery in Zanesville, Indiana.
