John Hughes Sr., 90, of Higginsport, has died.
Hughes enjoyed playing basketball and fishing when he was a child. He graduated from Higginsport High School in 1941, and at the age of 19 enlisted in the Unites States Navy, serving for three years in the South Pacific. The World War II veteran married and settled down in the village of New Richmond and worked a variety of trades. He took great pride in his work at Ford Motor Company, where he remained until his retirement in 1994.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, children James, Laura, John (Linda), Lisa (Clyde) Brubaker and Lanita (Jim) Hanekamp, grandchildren Adam, Lindsay and Aron Hanekamp, Nick Lasita, Danielle, Samantha, John III, and Hunter Hughes, David and Matthew Hughes and Taylor Lanton, great-grandchildren Jordan Lasita and Pandora Hanekamp and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Katie and Earl Hughes, first wife and mother of his children Juanita, siblings Marcella Johnson, Ada Smith, Mattie Gaskins and Louise Payne, brother Jimmy and nephew Perry Johnson and a host of many close friends, relatives and extended family.
Visitation 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. services March 22 at E.C. Nurre Funeral Home in Amelia. Interment at Moreland Memorial Cemetery in New Richmond. Memorials to Hospice of Cincinnati and a special thanks to the staff of hospice and Good Samaritan Hospital for making his final days peaceful and filled with dignity befitting a World War II Veteran.
