The sophomore class at Batavia High School sponsored a donkey basketball fundraiser and chili cookoff Saturday, Jan. 11.

The annual event raises money for student activities such as prom and graduation.

Players came from the elementary school and the middle school. There was also a good turnout of Batavia alumni who formed a team, and Clermont County Sheriff A.J. “Tim” Rodenberg, Clermont County Prosecutor Vince Faris, and US Marines from from the Eastgate Marine Recruiting Station formed a team.

“I want to thank everyone who participated and helped with the donkey basketball,” Randy Dorsey, class of 2016 advisor said. “It was clearly our biggest turnout. The class of 2016 cleared $2,500 after expenses.”

Sheriff Rodenberg said he enjoyed taking part in the event.

“It was a lot of fun, and it was for a good cause,” Rodenberg said. “I’ve wanted to do this for some time and now I can cross it off my bucket list,” Rodenberg said.

The chili cookoff drew nearly 20 pots of chili.

The winner of the chili cookoff was middle school science teacher Paul Moore. The second place chili cookoff winner was school board member Scott Runck.

“It was a great event and a prime example of how generous our faculty, staff, students, and community are with their time and energy,” Dorsey said.
