Free tire amnesty days to be held Oct. 24-26

The Adams Clermont Solid Waste District will be holding two free Tire Amnesty Days due to assistance from a tire grant received from Ohio EPA. The first event will be held in Adams County at the Adams Waste and Recycling Facility (AWAR), located at 95 Trefz Rd., West Union from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Oct. 24 – 26.

The Amnesty Days will not collect tires from junk yards, trucking, or other companies, as that would essentially amount to a subsidy of business expenses, but the ACSWD can assist businesses in finding recycling options for proper tire management.

Scrap tires lying around a property are aesthetically unpleasing and can pose a health and safety risk by acting as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and vermin. If left in the environment for long periods of time, orphan (abandoned) tires can leach toxic chemicals, such as zinc, heavy metals, vulcanization and rubber chemicals into ground and surface waters.

Municipal solid waste landfills won’t collect tires on trash routes and can’t accept them at their landfills. Dumping scrap tires over the hillside or on the side of the road is illegal and harmful to the environment. Furthermore the illegal dumping of scrap tires essentially passes the burden of tire disposal onto someone else (e.g. tax payers). Many citizens are unaware that there are many free and legal options for residents of Ohio Township to dispose of scrap tires.

The Adams Clermont Solid Waste District (ACSWD) also teams with many townships, to provide free tire recycling (up to 10 tires) for non-business applications during the annual “Junk Days” event for each township. Exceptions to the 10 tire limit can be made in the event involving the clean-up of a legacy tire dump.

Such events will require a name and address, with a signed statement as to source of the tires and they are not from a business that sells tires or generates numerous tires as part of their regular business activities, such as automobile repair, trucking, auto salvage business, etc. Check with the township of your residency to determine when the next “Junk Days” will be held.

To immediately dispose of tires, check with your local tire retailer or take them to Adams Brown Recycling in Georgetown (937) 378-3431, where tires can be recycled for a nominal fee.

If “orphan” tires have been dumped on your property, the ACSWD can have these tires removed and properly recycled. If you have been the victim of illegal dumping, please call (513) 732-7310 or (513) 732-7894 to make clean-up arrangements.

Goshen Township will be hosting a second tire amnesty event in Clermont County at the Goshen Twp. Administration Building, located at 6759 Wood St., Goshen, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Nov. 14 – 16.
