Gary B. Collins, 72, of Goshen, died June 26.
Collins graduated from Iowa State University with a PhD in botany and worked as a professor in the Botany Department at the Ohio State University. He was also employed by the Environmental Protection Agency as a research fresh water biologist for 31 years before retiring. Collins was an avid sport pilot since college, an environmentalist, nature lover, and humanitarian who was involved with two local Experimental Aircraft Associations chapters since 1977. He was considered one of America’s fresh water diatom/algae experts.
Collins is survived by daughters Jennifer (Jeremy) Brumbaugh and April (Chris) Stammen, ex-wife Bonnie Collins, significant other Tammy Goyke, grandchildren Soleil and Charlie Stammen and Elsa and Lucy Brumbaugh, and other cousins and relatives across the country.
Memorial gathering held 1 p.m. July 1 at E.C. Nurre Funeral Home in Amelia, until the Celebration of Life service at 2 p.m.
