The New Richmond Middle School eighth grade boys’ basketball team finished up their 2012-13 campaign with a 13-4 overall record and a win over Bethel-Tate Middle School in the championship game of the Southern Buckeye Conference league tournament.

The team, coached by Brian Benzinger and Steven Wolf, completed their championship run with a come-from-behind victory over their rivals from Bethel.

Trailing by three points with only one minute remaining, the Lions stormed back to take the conference title with a 44-41 win.

“I am very proud of and happy for the players,” first-year head coach Brian Benzinger said. “From day one, they were on a mission to improve from their seventh grade season.

“These are some talented basketball players who will serve New Richmond High School well.”

Many of the team members will move into varsity coach Brian McMonigle’s system next year and hope to help the Lions as they build one of the deepest programs in the Southern Buckeye Conference.

The varsity squad went 11-12 last year and finished third in the American Division of the SBC behind league champions, Amelia and runners-up, Goshen.

The Lions were 5-5 in conference play.
