The Union Township police department arrested a student from Glen Este High School after receiving reports of threats that a shooting was planned at the school Dec. 21.
According to Lieutenant Scott Gaviglia with Union Township Police Department, they began investigating the case after receiving calls Thursday evening.
“Union Township Communications center began receiving reports from parents of Glen Este students that there were posts on Facebook rumoring there was going to be a ‘shooting’ at the school Dec. 21,” Gaviglia wrote.
He said in a press release that the information was taken seriously and investigation was immediately initiated by Union Township police officers.
“In addition to the investigation, plans were made and executed by the police department to prepare for any event on Dec. 21,” Gaviglia wrote.
Union Township police arrested a 15-year-old student on Dec. 21 for inducing panic and tampering with evidence, both felonies.
“The juvenile initiated the post ‘to see what would happen,’” Gaviglia wrote.
He said she attempted to destroy evidence before the police could contact her.
Gaviglia said because of the juvenile’s actions they received hundreds of calls to the police department from concerned parents. He said in addition, other parents kept their kids out of school the next day.
“There were also rumors of police finding a weapon at the school,” Gaviglia wrote. “Those rumors are unfounded.”
He said there are no other suspects and the case is closed at this time.
