Local residents of all ages brought chairs and spread out in front of the amphitheater for the concert, some dancing and singing along with Chuck Brisbin and the Tuna Project, which headlined Aug. 4.
“It’s cool,” Rob Martin, of Mt. Carmel, said about the concert. “It’s a beautiful night, it’s free and we love music.”
Martin came with his wife, Connie, and his two daughters Haley, 7, and Chloe, 3. He said they have come to concerts at the township before.
Heather Norton, of Union Township, said she saw the signs advertising the concert and decided to check one out with family members.
“We like it,” Norton said. “It’s relaxing.”
Keith and Julie Clifford, of Batavia, are both musicians and said they come to the concerts because they are free and they are a good opportunity to hear other performers.
“We wanted to come see what other groups are doing,” Julie Clifford said.
Chuck Brisbin and The Tuna Project drew a big crowd to the amphitheater Aug. 2 and band members played a variety of blues songs.
“Our summer concert series goes over extremely well in Union Township,” Union Township Trustee Matthew Beamer said during the concert. “People really seem to enjoy them.”
Beamer said they have been hosting the summer concert series for several years and have continued to add more performers and more variety to the lineup each year.
Beamer said this year they even welcomed a gourmet hot dog vendor to sell food during the concerts.
“It’s been great,” Dave Carpenter, owner of Dave’s Dog House, said about business during the concerts.
Beamer said they have several concerts remaining this year. Clermont Philharmonic Orchestra will play Aug. 18, The Gamut will play Aug. 25, Stagger Lee will play Sept. 1 and Robin Lacy and DeZydego will play Sept. 8.
The village of New Richmond and Miami Township also hosted free summer concerts this year.
Ralph Shepherd, who organizes the concerts in New Richmond, said the concerts have been successful and popular there as well.
“They went very well,” Shepherd said about the concerts in New Richmond. “They were very well attended, the weather was wonderful except for one that was hot.”
Shepherd said a variety of bands played this summer including orchestras, bands that played popular music from the 1940s and 1950s, patriotic bands and more.
“They have been great,” Shepherd said. “And the sponsors have been very good to us.”
Shepherd said John Hale also sang the Star Spangled Banner before the concerts and members of the New Richmond Marine Veteran Color Guard also attended the concerts.
He said they do not have any remaining concerts this summer but will have a Sept. 11 memorial concert and plan to continue the series.
“We’re looking for a very good summer next year,” Shepherd said.
Miami Township has one more concert scheduled this year. The Clermont Philharmonic Orchestra is scheduled for Aug. 12.
