Peter Graves, second, of Clermont County, and his teammates failed to qualify for the semifinals in Olympic rowing’s quadruple sculls.

Peter Graves of Pierce Township, a member of the four-man quadruple sculls rowing team of the United States, will not be racing for an Olympic medal on Friday, August 3.

Graves, along with teammates Elliot Hovey, Alex Osborne and Wes Piermarini, failed to qualify for the semis out of the July 28 heats races and fell victim to a “crab” in the repechage on July 30, eliminating them from contention.

A “crab” occurs when a rower is unable to remove the oar blade from the water, causing the oar to act as a brake, slowing the boat down.

It was Piermarini who caught the crab and effectively stopped the US boat.

Graves and his teammates fought back valiantly to close on the other competitors, coming in fourth in the four-team heat in which they needed a third-place finish to qualify.

The lost by 0.72 seconds.
