Bob Roncker’s Running Spot has been the go-to shop in the Cincinnati area for more than 30 years when it comes to a place to find running supplies. The chain of stores added to its allure last year as it put its name to the Bob Roncker’s Running Spot High School Cross Country Camp.

In it’s second year of existence, the camp hopes to gain a few more attendees and improve their running styles while introducing them to different techniques.

“It’s open to kids going into the seventh grade through 12th grade and will go from 9-2 each day from July 17-20 at Landmark Christian Center,” Randy Cox, the camp director said. “We will have some guest speakers come in on nutrition, mental preparation and training in general. We do hill training and each day there are two opportunities each day to do something active.”

Cox, a former cross country runner at Norwood and the University of Cincinnati, started running in 1974 and has been doing it ever since. He has been coaching distance runners for over 30 years.

The camp will be sponsored by Nike and upon registration, runners will receive a Running Spot shirt, socks and addition Nike swag limited to the first 100 who register.

“Bob Roncker is going to come and speak about training form,” Cox said. “He does what’s called a smooth running class and he’s going to teach running form to all the campers.

“That’s something that we really focus on. They might run their whole life and never be trained anything on form whatsoever and that’s a really big part of the picture – running with good form.”

Each day, the camp will have a few guest speakers ranging from expert runners from around the area to a couple of head coaches from high schools around the area that have had a lot of success.

Last year, the camp had over 50 kids, but Cox is hoping to have a few more kids sign up and attend this year.

Cox will be assisted by Joe Brinkman as the co-camp director. Brinkman was in charge of getting most of the itinerary set while Cox was in charge of getting the guest speakers.

“This is primarily a learning camp,” Cox said. “We understand that in four days you really can’t improve your fitness, but you can learn things that can help you for the rest of your life.”
