Susan Hardoerfer, fourth from from the left in front, works with some weight training with her class outside the Nothin’ But Net Sports Complex in Mount Carmel. She and her class members interviewed mentioned they have noticed a definite increase in the number of people in the classes and the much increased enthusiasm in learning to improve their individual health, strength, and endurance.
Susan Hardoerfer teaches Zumba classes in Clermont County and Anderson Township. The western Clermont County resident is one of the most well-liked and well-respected and talented Zumba instructors in the area.

She has a very active athletic history including playing numerous sports and was a cheerleader at Amelia High School.

She explained how she got started in Zumba. “A friend and I went to an event where there was a Zumba demonstration. I was every excited about what I saw and I decided to participate and learn all I could and then I became one of the first Zumba teachers in Clermont County.

“I got certified at the Dayton Hara Arena and taught my first classes at Clough Pike United Methodist Church.

The classes were continuing to grow and now we have moved into a larger space for the bigger classes at Nothin’ But Net where I can teach classes of more than 100 people. I love teaching with my daughter Sydney who is a cheerleader at McNicholas High School. Zumba helps her with her dancing and cheerleading. She’s just 16 and is already a certified Zumba instructor.

“Zumba is good for people of all ages and fitness levels for beginners, tri-athletes, kids, parents, grandparents, and men.”

Sue’s husband, Gary, is a member of the Milford High School Athletic Hall of Fame where he was an all-star football player, wrestler, and baseball player and advanced to play sports on the collegiate level.

Sue is a real booster and supporter of Zumba that she explains is a dance fitness program inspired by Latin dance. She said it is not a typical dance class. It involves aerobics along with dancing that includes repetition of such dance routines the likes of belly dancing, meringue, hip-hop, and samba to name a few.

In addition to helping individuals with their health, she added, “I get so much enjoyment to see happiness and the positive transformation of someone’s life like weight loss in this very social program and activity. Zumba later inspired moves for teaching fitness of every type like kicking, pilates, aerobics of all types and levels of fitness and gymnastics.”

Emily Garrett is a 54-year old native of the area who works in Amelia and says Zumba has improved her life.

“My daughter inspired me. I lost 30 pounds in the first three months of classes. Sue’s inspired me, too. It’s fun. I love the music. It’s not like work. It gives us a hard work out while we’re having fun.”

Amanda Olden is a 25-year old from the Eastgate area who started to become involved with Zumba less than two years ago.

She said, “It’s fun. It’s not like a normal workout class. This is fun. My mom (Denise Olden) got me started after we saw Sue do this. It is definitely fun.”

“This is a perfect way to sculpt yourself while having a blast. Zumba toning is body sculpting exercise and high energy cardio workout with Latin-infused moves to create a calorie-torching by burning out calories. It’s a strength training fitness party to have fun while sculpting and toning,” said Sue. “It’s fun seeing the joy in people’s eyes. My husband says he loves it because the workout gives him a good hard sweat. I love it because its for all ages, but this is mainly for adults to get into and to remain in shape.”

Classes are taught at Nothin’ But Net, 4343 Mt. Carmel-Tobasco Rd. on Thursday nights at 6:30 p. m. and at Clough United Methodist Church on Fridays beginning at 9 a. m. and Saturdays beginning at 9:30 a.m.
