Five Grant Career Center Business and Finance I students made a “clean sweep” at the recent Business Professionals of America regional contest. Students competed against BPA members from eight different schools in the Region 13 area.

The “Fabulous Five” brought home top awards in the Fundamental Accounting contest. Placing first in the challenging competition was Taylor Eckart, New Richmond.

Closely following were classmates in 2nd place, Eli Wright, Williamsburg; 3rd place, Corey Bishop, Williamsburg; 4th place, Jeff Hensley, New Richmond; and 5th place, Kim Philhower, Bethel-Tate.

When the five students where called to the stage at the award ceremony, Shelia Farrell, Business and Finance instructor, said she was thrilled.

"I was thrilled and absolutely floored. Sometimes you know that your students are good but this truly validated their classroom performances. This was the best outcome I have ever had in competition!"

The contest consisted of completing and explaining the purpose of the various steps in the accounting cycle. The students also summarized, organized, and prepared an income statement and a balance sheet. Other competencies covered in the timed test were classification of accounts, banking procedures, inventory, and payroll preparation.

All of these skills are perfected daily as part of the student's career and training program.

With the win at the regional competition, Taylor Eckart and Eli Wright have earned the privilege to represent Grant Career Center at the State Competition in Columbus this March. Their ultimate goal is to earn a spot at the National Competition in Anaheim, California, later this spring. Taylor Eckart was shocked when he heard his name announced in first place.

"I didn't believe it at first but it was pretty cool to have my classmates surrounding me on the award stage."

Eli Wright added, "I am proud of Taylor, but I am looking forward to going to state competition and I want to be number one and move on to the national level."
