The Amelia Village Police Department received a vote of confidence from council members during the meeting on Monday, Feb. 1 when they agreed to ask voters to approve a replacement levy for the police department.

After hearing a presentation by Amelia Police Chief Jeff Sucher, council members voted to begin the process of putting a levy on the ballot in May.

“Chief Sucher has long been on the record with recommendations regarding staffing from the Ohio Police Officers Association,” said Mayor Leroy Ellington.

“We need to increase the number of full-time officers to have more coverage on shifts,” said Sucher. “The number of police calls we receive has increased and many times we have only one officer to cover a shift.”

Currently there are two full-time officers and five part-time officers on staff in addition to the chief. The passage of the levy would insure that the chief could hire two more full-time officers which would enable him to have two officers covering each shift.
