Union Township officials have been seeking cost saving measures for the police and fire departments budgets since a safety services levy failed to pass in February 2009. After a number of work sessions with department heads, Township Administrator David Duckworth presented his final recommendations for a levy to the board Wednesday, July 15.

Duckworth had met with Fire Chief Stanley Deimling and Police Chief Terry Zinser to reduce their budgets and he offered the board several scenarios based upon the final figures.

After much discussion and a look at the five year budget forecast, the board of trustees opted to go with a budget based on the passage of a 2.95 mill levy. The levy will be shared between the police and fire departments with the police department receiving 1.25 mills and the fire department receiving 1.7 mills.
