At a special meeting Monday, May 18, Bethel council members voted that Bethel Police officer Merv Clemmons will be layed off from the police department effective May 18.

“Officer Clemmons will get the option of being paid for one third of his sick time,” Mayor John Swarthout said. “He can choose to carry over his sick time if he goes to work for another police department within the state.”

Accounting errors dating back to 2004 have resulted in the village having to move funds from the general fund and subsequently creating a shortage in that fund. During the Bethel Council meeting Monday, May 11, council voted to eliminate one full-time officer from the department.
