Milford scores in state swim championships

Milford’s boys swimming team dented the scoring column in the state championship meet that took place at the C. T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

The 200-yard freestyle relay recorded the points for Milford with its 15th place finish with a time of 1-minute, 29.45-seconds. The members of the quartet were freshman Beau Robinson, senior Joey Griffin, senior Matt D’Errico, and junior Eric Sanders.

Robinson was 17th in the 100 butterfly with a clocking of 53.17.

The 200 medley relay was 19th completing the race with a new school record of 1:40.05. This foursome consisted of junior Dan Matulis, senior Kyle Tepe, Robinson, and Sanders.

The 400 free relay also came in 19th. The time for junior Chris Williams, Griffin, Robinson, and Sanders was 3:18.17. To qualify for the state championship meet, they set a new school record at the district meet with a clocking of 3:17.60.

The girls also did their share of record-setting performances during the season.

Margaret Craycraft, a sophomore, now owns the one-meter diving standard that she set during the regular season in a home meet against Turpin. In Canton she was 19th with a total of 249.50 points.

Gwen Storch, junior, established two new marks. In the 200 individual medley she completed the course in 2:14.49 and in the 100 backstroke she wrapped up the race in 1:01.27.

Julilyn Brown, a junior, broke a 17-year old record in the 50 free with a time of 25.11.

The 200 free relay of senior Kate McClure, junior Naomi Week, junior Laurin McClure, and Brown own the record with a time 1:42.59.

"This was an absolutely tremendous season for the swimming Eagles," said Gary Tameris, head coach of the swimming Milfordians.
