Schaljo sinks 1,000th point, Lions host Canadian team, GE boys upset Milford

Louie Schaljo, Bethel-Tate junior guard-forward, scored the 1,000th point of his three-year varsity basketball career in the Tigers’ home victory against the East Clinton Astros, Feb. 4.

Glen Este pulled off an upset over Milford and New Richmond hosted Georgetown, Ontario, Canada, in the major highlights of the brief amount Clermont County high school boys basketball action due to the bad weather.

Bethel-Tate

The Tigers easily eased by East Clinton 64-45.

Schaljo, who scored nine points versus the visiting Clinton countians, netted his 1,000th career point with a jump shot from the top of the key with one-minute and 33-seconds gone in the third quarter.

At this point the game was stopped and Rick Wilson, Bethel-Tate athletic director, presented the game ball to Schaljo who then gave it to his mother and a proclamation was read by Wilson that had been sent for the occasion by Ohio United States Senator Sherrod Brown. After the game the Bethel-Tate Athletic Boosters presented Schaljo with a sweat shirt proclaiming the scoring of the 1,000th point and other mementoes were presented, too.

Bethel-Tate was in command at the end of every quarter of this Southern Buckeye Conference non-division game 23-9, 33-16, and 49-26.

Sophomore guard-forward Tyler Bullock led the winners in scoring with 13 points and senior forward Mike Hill made 14 including three three-point field goals.

Glen Este

The Trojans surprised Fort Ancient Valley Conference Buckeye Division contender Milford by downing the Eagles 54-51. The visiting northern Clermont countians were ahead 17-14 and 32-27 after the first two intermissions, but the Purple and White took over 41-37 after three periods of play.

Curt Wesp, GE junior forward, led all scorers with 20 points including perfect free-throw accuracy in the closing minutes of the game. Teammate Andy King, a senior guard, made two threes including one at the end of the first half that covered more than half the court. Senior forward Mark Bryant made 16 points and sophomore guard Zach Baker made 15 (three three-pointers) to pace the scoring for the Red and White.

New Richmond

The Lions hosted Georgetown, Ontario, Canada, and was treated to a 43-36 setback. The visitors led at each intermission 11-5, 18-12, and 26-18.

Senior guard Justin Wilson was the scoring leader for the Red and Black by sinking 17 points.

Milford

In an encounter between Eagles the Clermont County edition lost to the Walnut Hills Eagles 54-49 in Hamilton County. In this non-conference confrontation, the hosts were flying very slightly ahead at each rest 12-10, 23-21, and 36-34.

Bryant sank 17 points for Milford and sophomore forward Nick Hittner contributed 14.

Amelia

The Barons lost a home Fort Ancient Valley Conference Cardinal Division contest to Wilmington 67-49. The Hurricanes led all the way 12-0, 31-18, and 48-35.

The leading scorers for the Blue and White were senior guard Donovan Schwalbach with 15 points and senior forward Willie Tansey with 11.
