Economics was the issue that dominated the first debate between U.S. Representative Jean Schmidt, Democratic challenger Victoria Wulsin, and Independent candidate David Krikorian.

Held at the Anderson Center Oct. 6, the one-hour debate focused on the $700 billion government bailout of the nation’s struggling financial markets, which Schmidt voted in favor of in Congress last week (but voted against the first version).

Schmidt, a Republican who was first elected to represent the second district six years ago, said that the bailout bill that she supported in Congress was a mandatory first step in helping the economy recover.
