The Batavia Village Council heard the first reading of an ordinance at its regular meeting Oct. 6 to reimburse the chief of police $3,008.69 in attorney fees.

At a special meeting Sept. 22, council voted to reimburse Chief Mike Gardner for the fees. An ordinance prepared by Village Solicitor George Leicht authorizing the village clerk to pay the bill was presented to council at the Oct. 6 meeting.

A motion to suspend the three-reading rule, which would allow the ordinance to take effect immediately if approved in a subsequent vote, failed to receive the necessary five votes.
