A Kentucky man fell 1,500 feet to his death in the Union Township area when his parachute failed to open Aug. 22.

Thomas J. Bartlett, 21, of Owensboro, Ky., jumped from a helicopter around 7:30 p.m. last Friday night near the Rowe Woods, which is part of the Cincinnati Nature Center.

Union Township police sergeant Scott Gaviglia said that Bartlett’s parachute opened only 10 to 40 feet from the ground of a resident’s back yard, just due east of the nature center and Tealtown Road, which was tragically too late, Gaviglia said.

Bartlett, who was pronounced dead after arriving at the Anderson Mercy Hospital, was an experienced sky diver who took care of his own equipment, Gaviglia said.
