Union Township resident Lorene Middleton, 70, is receiving an elder caregiver award by the Ohio Department of Aging.

Middleton, who has been a selfless and devoted caregiver for her entire life, said that she was shocked, but very happy, when she heard that she had been nominated and then selected to receive such an honor.

“I thought to myself, what do you mean?” she recalls after hearing the news. “You don’t get rewards for taking care of your family, do you? Caring for those we love is something that we just do – and I have been doing just that for as long as I can remember.”

Born and raised in a Kentucky coal mining town, Middleton, known as “Rene” to her friends and loved ones, nursed and cared for her grandparents and parents before moving to the Cincinnati area in the 1950’s.
